Who we are

The Japanese Choral Society of Washington has been performing in Washington DC's unique cultural scene under music director Kimiko Shimada since 2001.  Kimiko's dynamic performance and teaching skill elevated a group of ordinary music lovers into a harmonious group of singers.  Our repertoire includes traditional and contemporary Japanese songs, classic choral pieces, and American folk music.

Performance

Our regular performances include an annual recital at the Lyceum in Alexandria VA,  a holiday concert, the Japanese New Years Festival, and the Japanese Stone Lantern Lighting Ceremony at the National Cherry Blossom Festival.

We were featured performers at the Willard InterContinental Hotel during the National Cherry Blossom Festival 2018.

On December10, 2022, we performed the National Anthem at the Washington Wizards and Brooklyn Nets game at the Japanese Heritage Night, held at the Capital One Arena in Washington DC.

On April 3, 2019 and March 29, 2023, we performed at Carnegie Hall, Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage as participants of the New York Chorus Festival, a benefit concert organized by JAEXA.

On July 14 & 15, 2023, we were honored to perform songs from the beloved Studio Ghibli films at Wolf Trap in Vienna, Virginia with The Washington Chorus and National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Joe Hisaishi himself, the composer of the music.
